Dr. Timothy Young, Board Certified Foot Surgeon Discusses Surgery for a Bunionette or Tailor's Bunion Surgery
A tailor's bunion is a problem, or the fifth metatarsal and the fifth metatarsal head protrude laterally or to the outside of the foot. This causes pressure and pain especially with shoes ski boots etc. This is usually a structural problem. The fifth metatarsal tends to angle outward away from the adjacent fourth metatarsal. Sometimes it is a simple problem and it's just enlargement of the head of the fifth metatarsal. From a surgical perspective this can be treated by surgically shaving down the bump. This tends to be a much quicker recovery.
This would involve the incision, surgically incising the joint capsule then shaving down the bone and using a surgical orthopedic burr to smooth that down area. After the bony prominence has been smoothed down and reduced the wound is flushed and the layers including the capsule subcutaneous layer and skin are all surgically repaired and sutured. This tends to be a quick recovery it can be as short as 3 weeks in a cast boot.

Dr. Nelson Discusses the Best Correction Techniques for Surgery on Bunions, Tailor's Bunions
Bunions and tailor’s bunion can be quite painful. Often times we see hammertoes associated with tailor’s bunions on the outside of the foot or on the inside of the foot. Bunion pain especially bunion pain of the big toe can be extremely difficult for patients that are active. We get a lot of questions for what is the best bunion correction that can be performed utilizing surgical techniques. We also get a lot of questions regarding minimally invasive type bunion procedures. The most important part of bunion surgery is having your bunion evaluated.
I highly recommend meeting your surgeon in person and have them evaluate your foot both clinically and radiographically. X-rays are paramount as well as the clinical exam to see what is causing the bunion deformity and what is the best correction method to be applied. There are many different types of bunion surgeries from what we call head procedures or procedures performed at the distal aspect of the first metatarsal or base procedures which are procedures performed at the proximal aspect. The recovery and the long-term reduction of the deformity can be correlated to type of bunion procedure that is done as well as a factors contributing to the bunion. Every bunion procedure we perform the patient can walk on the foot after the procedure and all of them are done in the office to save both time and money.
If you have tried bunion pads and other bunion relief options give us a call and we’ll help you fix your bunion. Give us a call at 425-391-8666 or make an apointment online today. Myself (Dr. Brandon Nelson) or my partner Dr. Timothy Young would love to see you.

Dr. Timothy Young Talks About Tailor’s Bunion Surgery in Seattle.
We often ignore the Tailor’s bunion. This is the painful bump that develops on the outside of the foot or lateral aspect of the foot just behind the small toe. Sometimes the surgery is very simple and basic and just involves shaving down the extra bone in the area and smoothing it down and then suturing things back together.
Other times patients have what we would call a splay foot and especially splaying of the fourth and fifth metatarsal. This is where the fifth metatarsal bows out. In this case, we have to reset the fifth metatarsal and surgically realign it back in its normal position. When this is done typically we will use at least one screw to help maintain the alignment of the bone in its new position. if you have a question about Tailor’s bunion correction or treatment options please contact our office at 425-391-8666 or make an appointment online.
You can speak to myself Dr. Timothy Young or my partner Dr. Brandon Nelson. We both work at Foot Surgical Center of Issaquah. This serves the Greater Seattle Area, including Bellevue Issaquah and Redmond.
