Avoid Going Barefoot!

walking barefoot through grassThis is the time of year when people are getting active again after a long winter. Families are out on vacation and people are starting to increase their exercise, including walking and running.

One thing to consider with heel pain and plantar fasciitis is not going barefoot. Whether you're on vacation by the pool, or walking around the house with brand-new hardwood floors, going barefoot can be a problem. It is important to wear either a shoe or sandal.

In certain situations it may be much more practical to wear a very good, supportive sandal instead of a shoe, like when you're on vacation, at the beach, or at the pool. However, it's not always easy to find a great sandal that offers enough support and cushioning to reduce the risk of plantar fasciitis, or for those patients who already have it (to help the healing process). To remedy this, we now carry Vionic sandals and slippers in our office for our patients. These are great because they have exceptionally good support and cushioning. They also incorporate some of the technology utilized with prescription orthotics. It is surprising how many patients come into the office wearing either very thin soled flip-flops or flats and explaining how much that her feet hurt. With these shoes and flip-flops, my feet hurt just looking at them!

Remember not to go barefoot especially, if you already have plantar fasciitis. If you do have other questions about plantar fasciitis or treatment options please feel free to contact either Dr. Brandon Nelson or Dr. Timothy Young. We would be happy to see you.
