There are many different causes of heel pain. The most common causes of heel pain are plantar fasciitis, nerve entrapment and heel bursitis. Heel bursitis can have similar signs and symptoms as some of these other conditions.
Heel bursitis is basically a sack of fluid that develops to cushion the bottom of foot from repetitive stress. Often times this bursal sac can be felt directly on the heel. More advanced imaging like an ultrasound can help confirm bursitis. Upon ultrasound examination of the heel one can see a large sac filled with fluid. It is important to differentiate the causes of heel pain as they are not all treated the same.
