Lifestyle Factors May Contribute to Cracked Heels
Cracked heels, also known as heel fissures, are a common foot condition characterized by dry, thickened skin that develops cracks at the heel's edge. These fissures can be painful and may lead to further complications if left untreated. The primary causes include skin disorders like eczema and psoriasis, which can cause dryness and irritation. Lifestyle factors also play a significant role, as prolonged standing, walking barefoot, and wearing open-back shoes can contribute to the development of cracked heels. Additionally, environmental conditions like low humidity and excessive exposure to water can strip the skin of its natural moisture. Proper foot care, including regular moisturizing and wearing supportive shoes, is essential for preventing cracked heels, ensuring healthy and comfortable feet. Cracked heels can cause severe pain, and it may be difficult to complete daily activities. If you have developed this condition, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist who can offer you prescribed medication for effective treatment.

Cracked Heels
It is important to moisturize your cracked heels in order to prevent pain, bleeding, and infection. The reason cracked heels form is because the skin on the foot is too dry to support the immense pressure placed on them. When the foot expands, the dry skin on the foot begins to split.

Solutions for Cracked Heels
Cracked heels may make you want to think twice about showing off your feet in warmer weather. However, cracked heels may be harmful to more than just the appearance of your feet. If deep fissures and cracks develop in your heels, they may make walking and standing painful for you. Additionally, these openings make way for germs to enter through your skin and cause infection.
There are several different causes of cracked heels. One of the most common reasons for this ailment is dry skin. This problem may make your keeps feel rough tight and itchy. Dry skin may be caused by cold air, extremely hot water, harsh soaps, and aging. Skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis may eventually lead to dry skin. In some cases, complications may arise from cracked heels. Some of these complications are a loss of feeling in the heel, cellulitis, or a diabetic foot ulcer.
There are ways you can try to prevent getting cracked heels. One of the best ways to do so is to avoid wearing flip flops and sandals because these shoes increase your risk of drying out your feet. You should also avoid wearing shoes with a tall skinny heel, because these shoes cause your heel to expand sideways. At night, you should slather on a thick moisturizing cream on your feet and then cover them in socks to keep your feet moisturized overnight. Drinking water to stay hydrated is also a good way to ensure that your skin doesn’t become dry.
If you suffer from a severe case of cracked feet, you should make an appointment with your podiatrist to see what treatment methods are best for you.
Causes and Risk Factors for Hammertoe
Hammertoe is a condition characterized by an abnormal bending of the toe at the middle joint, resembling a hammer. This deformity often arises due to an imbalance in the muscles and tendons that control the toe's position. Common causes include wearing ill-fitting shoes, particularly those with narrow toe boxes, which can exacerbate the issue. Other contributing factors may involve inherited foot structure, arthritis, or previous injuries to the toes. Certain risk factors can increase the likelihood of developing hammertoe, such as age, as the condition is more prevalent in older adults, and lifestyle choices that include frequent use of high-heeled or tight footwear. Hammertoe can be uncomfortable and unsightly. If you see the beginning signs of hammertoe or have pain from an existing hammertoe, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can help you manage this condition.
Hammertoe
Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact the podiatrists from Issaquah Foot & Ankle Specialists. Our doctors will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.
Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.
Symptoms
- Pain in the affected toes
- Development of corns or calluses due to friction
- Inflammation
- Redness
- Contracture of the toes
Causes
Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible
Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur
Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe
Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe
Treatment
Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it
Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used
Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

What Are Hammertoes?
Hammertoes are painful deformities that frequently form on the second, third, or fourth toe. The condition is often caused by an issue in foot mechanics. This can be caused by the person’s specific gait or the manner in which they walk, or by shoes that do not comfortably fit the deformity. Hammertoes can be formed after wearing shoes that are too narrow or short for the foot or have excessively high heels. Shoes that are not properly sized will force the toes into a bent position for long periods of time. This can cause the muscles to shorten and toes to bend into the deformity of a hammertoe.
Hammertoe can also be caused by complications from rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, trauma to the foot, heredity, or a cerebral vascular accident. Pain and difficult mobility of the toes, deformities, calluses, and corns are all symptoms of a hammertoe.
Someone who suspects they have the symptoms of a hammertoe should consult with a physician—particularly a podiatrist. Podiatrists diagnose and treat complications of the foot and ankle. If the podiatrist discovers that the affected toes are still flexible, treatment for the hammertoe may simply involve exercise, physical therapy, and better-fitting shoes. Treatment for hammertoes typically involves controlling foot mechanics, such as walking, through the use of customized orthotics.
For more serious cases in which the toes have become inflexible and rigid, surgery may be suggested. During the operation, the toe would receive an incision to relieve pressure on the tendons. A re-alignment of the tendons may then be performed by removing small pieces of bone to straighten the toe. In some cases, the insertion of pins is needed to keep the bones in the proper position as the toe heals. The patient is usually allowed to return home on the same day as the surgery.
If surgery is performed to repair a hammertoe, following the postoperative directions of your doctor is essential. Directions may include several stretches, picking up marbles with your toes, or attempting to crumple a towel placed flat against your feet. Wear shoes that have low heels and a wide amount of toe space to maintain comfort. Closed-toe shoes and high heels should be avoided. Shoes with laces allow the wearer to adjust how fitted he or she may want the shoes to be and also allow for greater comfort. To provide adequate space for your toes, select shoes that have a minimum of one-half inch of space between the tip of your longest toe and the inside of the shoe. This will also relieve pressure on your toes and prevent future hammertoes from forming.
Other preventative measures that can be taken include going shopping for new shoes in the middle of the day. Your feet are its smallest in the morning and swell as the day progresses. Trying on and purchasing new shoes midday will give you the most reliable size. Be sure to check that the shoes you purchase are both the same size. If possible, ask the store to stretch out the shoes at its painful points to allow for optimum comfort.

Healthy Foot Development in Children
The development of children's feet begins during pregnancy when the basic structures form in the early weeks. By the second trimester, the bones of the feet start to develop, and by birth, a newborn's feet contain approximately 26 bones, many of which are still made of cartilage. As children grow, their feet undergo significant changes, with arches developing around age two to three. To support healthy foot development, parents can make proper footwear choices, opting for shoes that provide ample room for toes to move and grow. Allowing children to walk barefoot on safe surfaces helps strengthen foot muscles and improve balance. Regularly monitoring foot growth and ensuring that shoes fit correctly can prevent issues such as flat feet or other alignment problems. If your child’s feet are not growing as expected, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can monitor your child’s foot health and development and provide necessary treatment.
Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact the podiatrists of Issaquah Foot & Ankle Specialists. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Conditions Causing Red Feet in Elderly People
Red feet in elderly individuals can be indicative of several underlying health issues. One common cause is peripheral artery disease, where reduced blood flow leads to inflammation and redness. Venous insufficiency is another condition where poor circulation results in blood pooling and skin discoloration. Diabetes can also cause red feet due to poor blood circulation and increased susceptibility to infections. Skin conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis, may lead to redness and irritation, while infections like cellulitis can cause inflammation and a reddened appearance. Addressing these symptoms promptly is essential for managing the underlying conditions effectively. If you are a senior or are caring for an elderly person, it is suggested that you schedule regular appointments with a podiatrist who can monitor foot health.

Elderly Foot Care
As you grow older, you will start to notice more problems with your feet due to wear and tear. This may also happen because the skin will start to become thin and lose elasticity. Some signs of aging feet are regular aches and pains, bunion development, and clawed toes.
Fortunately, there are ways you can improve comfort, relieve pain, and maintain mobility in your feet. One of the best ways to deal with aging feet is to exercise. If you keep active, your muscles will become toned which will then strengthen the arches in the foot and stimulate blood circulation.
It is important that you practice proper foot care to protect your aging feet. You should wash your feet in warm water on an everyday basis. Afterward, the feet need to be dried well and it is important to dry between the toes. Your toenails should be trimmed and kept under control; nails that are poorly cut may become ingrown. At the end of each day, performing an inspection of your feet will allow you to detect any ailments in their early stages.
As you grow older, it becomes more important that you wear comfortable shoes. Your shoes should be secure, and they should provide decent arch support. If you are looking to buy a new pair of shoes, it is best to look for a pair that are made from a breathable material. It is also helpful to have shoes that have a bit of extra room at the top of the shoe, especially if you suffer from swollen feet.
The most common foot problems that elderly people will encounter are bunions, calluses, corns, hammertoes, heel pain, and foot problems related to diabetes. Some other issues include arch pain, tarsal tunnel syndrome, Achilles tendonitis, and Morton’s neuroma
An annual foot examination is a great way for you to ensure that you do not have any serious health problems with your feet. You should talk to a podiatrist about the available treatment options for whichever foot issue you are dealing with.
